ANTH 3820 Cultures of the Mediterranean Syllabus FALL 2019

This course explores the diverse societies of the Mediterranean region as a geographic and cultural area that spans south and southeast Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The course explores classic and emerging themes in the anthropology of the Mediterranean—from the concept of honor and shame and beliefs about the evil eye to the allure of the Mediterranean diet and the cultural impact of migration movements, past and present. We situate these themes within broader studies of religion, gender, colonialism/postcolonialism, nationalism/ethnic conflict, and transnational trade in the region.
